Founded in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles, Omaha-based Scooter’s Coffee is a growing innovator in the coffee industry. The franchise had approximately 300 locations in 2021 and expanded to nearly 700 stores across 29 states by its 25th anniversary in 2023. Today, Scooter’s Coffee operates more than 900 locations in 32 states.

The Challenge

Lukas Partners needed to create a show-stopping integrated communications plan that could cut through a crowded national media landscape—simultaneously celebrating Scooter’s Coffee’s 25th anniversary, increasing brand awareness and supporting the franchise’s rapid expansion nationwide.

Here’s how Lukas Partners collaborated with Scooter’s Coffee to make the World’s Largest Cake Ball a reality and generate widespread media attention around the brand’s rapid growth.

Planning & Execution for Event Promotion

Our team worked closely with Scooter’s Coffee to align cross-functional teams and develop a comprehensive media strategy around the Guinness World Record-breaking cake ball. We coordinated interviews before, during and after the record-breaking attempt—plus, we drafted talking points and provided media training to Scooter’s Coffee executives ahead of the GROW Conference. Additionally, we coordinated follow-up calls with reporters to confirm coverage of the two-hour cake ball assembly.

Media Kits

We assembled and hand-delivered media kits to Omaha news media, which included a media alert highlighting GROW Conference interview opportunities, Birthday Cake Bites to promote the record attempt and branded Scooter’s Coffee merchandise. Following the event, our team created a digital media kit featuring a news release, in addition to photos and videos of the cake ball. We distributed the digital media kit to news outlets across Scooter’s Coffee markets nationwide to continue momentum. The news also distributed via Globe Newswire to boost SEO by increasing mentions of the brand across the web.
